15 Ideas to Build Your Business in the Summer

Summer Is Coming - 15 Ideas to Build Your Business in the Summer

Contributors: Nancy Grinsell, Amy Minett, Wendy Kennedy, Kelly Boyd, Monica Walden, Carol Palaian, Susie Kinsman, Barbara O’Loughlin and Shawn Kenelty

1. Customer Appreciation Day
July is a new catalog!  Great time for an open house…. A Summer Tea (Have everyone bring their favorite tea cup.  Have them share stories - and give raffle tickets for the favorite tea cup story.)  Talk about summer reading…. Share the YUMMY new titles - book shows - and have buying special for orders placed that day ! or a ….. Christmas in July … Offer a free storytelling time with bookfair for situations like …. A summer reading club / Art Day at library / Science day at the library / Corporate Vendor Days / Farmer’s Markets / Flea Markets / Teacher Appreciation Parties / Businesses with Child care centers / Garage Sales (not for sales) for leads

2. Story Time at the Park/Pool/Local School or Library
Do one story time a month at a different park and invite your friends, family and customers to join you.  Pick new titles and favorites to share.  Have it sponsored by the library or held at a neighborhood pool.  Read UBAM books and have a book sale.  Decorate Book Marks.  Read Mouse, Squirrel, FYT Tales, etc

3. Booths – Festivals
Booths are plentiful during the summer.  Every town has different festivals (Town Festival, Reading Festival, etc.).  Call the Chamber of Commerce, Newspapers, Community Boards.  Booths are great places to meet leads for the fall.  OFFER a “treat” for booking a show in ______ (Sept, Oct, … whatever).  Booths are for leads -  Not huge sales… but you never know !Summer events can be fun, just make sure if they are outside that you have a tent in case of rain.

4. Theme Parties – June – Vacation, July – 4th of July, August – Back to School
Pick a theme to base your home parties around.  Bring books that celebrate that theme.

Examples:

a. Vacation – SDD Vacation, Around the World, 1001 TTS on Vacation, 100 Things for Little Children to Do On a Trip, Oliver Moon’s Summer Howliday, Anna Hibiscus, When You Are Camping

b. 4th of July – What Does the President Look Like?, Old Abe Eagle Hero, The Dog Who Loved Red, Any books by our American authors or American pastimes, A Baseball Story, Hit the Ball Duck, A Hockey Story.

c. Back to School – Time for School Sticker Book, Telling Time, Wrap-ups, Learning Palette, Wipe-Clean Books, Award Winning Books

5. Call all your dead leads or do your customer service calls
Call those people you have been trying to get a hold of.  They might have more time during the Summer.

6. Host an event based on a unique holiday
Look for some unique holidays to celebrate that revolve around reading or that we might have books on that topic.  Children’s Book Week, Talk Like a Pirate Day, etc.

7. Host a vendor event at your house with your favorite vendors
Have a Christmas in July, August, whatever month and invite vendors you would like to get free stuff from to come set up a table.  These can be really fun as long as it is promoted well.

8. Work on your Social Network sites.  Post book reviews, contests, helpful tips, etc.
Do you even have a Facebook page?  How many likes do you have?  Make sure you post useful information to keep your fans coming back for more.

9. $100 Sundae Party (Mystery Hostess Party)
Collect $100 in orders from Friends and Family.  Close out on a SUNDAY NIGHT and invite the kids for a SUNDAE PARTY.  You can use the half price books for your sales.  Let one lucky winner get ALL THE FREE BOOKS.

10. Collaborate with your listed schools to have some reading events or promote a Summer Reading Program.
Ask your listed schools if the library is open during the Summer or if they run a Summer Reading Program.  You never know, they might be interested.  You have to ask to find out though.

a. Bookfairs at Summer Camps
Set-up to sell during pick-up hours.  You can offer the event as a fundraiser for the camp for new equipment, OR for kid kits or art books for their art classes.  Book Fairs at summer programs - can be repeated 2 or 3 times during a summer - because there are different campers each session.

b. Reach For the Stars
RFTS at Summer Camps - Libraries - Community - home schoolers - anything like that is GREAT.  RFTS is a GREAT summer program to promote literacy.  Organize it - set up a set dates - get families involved - and have fun!

c. Day Cares
Private childcare centers offer great opportunities for book fairs.  If you do 5 or 6 centers at once, you can combine them into one large book fair and get everyone more free books.  You can find telephone numbers in the newspaper or phone book.  Call and tell them that you are looking for new cliental and offer them a book fair.  Staff the event during pick up time one or two days at each center.  Send home flyers.  This is a great chance to book shows.

11. Get out and meet people.
Here’s some ideas for making it easier for you.

a. Smile. People are naturally attracted to people who smile at them and it eases the way into a conversation.

b. Be approachable. If you are in a hostile, hurried or anxious state of mind, people avoid you. When you want to connect with people, be calm and centered.

c. Be friendly. If you are standing in a line at the store or someone asks you a question about how to find something, jump in start a conversation or provide some helpful advice. Some of my best conversations have been with strangers. Remember a stranger is a friend you haven’t met yet!

12. Craft Days
Invite past or potential customers/hostesses to your house for a CRAFT DAY (mom and child) for 60 minutes.  Do a craft out of our books.  Have the books for sale.  Charge $3 per child to cover the expenses of the materials.  Read them a book after the project and let parents shop!  You can do multiple classes based on age or different activities.  One consultant did this one summer every Saturday for 5 or 6 weeks - 4 classes each Saturday from 9 - 1:30 ….  Every week she sold over $300 in books!  Plus it reestablished contact with old hostesses and customers to rebook shows.

13. Science Club / Camp with Homeschoolers
Contact a homeschool group and propose the idea.  Have them pay for supplies for the projects.  Set up a book sale for the parents while you guide the children through projects.  With homeschoolers you will have sales - don’t worry.  Some might book parties.  Homeschoolers will pay big time for “field trips”.  Make sure to have a fee - to cover the supplies and cash in your pocket for the time.  Space Camp would work great with this.

14. Kids’ Parties (Birthday Party, Kids’ Cooking Party, Messy Art Party, Science Party, etc.)
Take a kid kit or project and charge for the book, kit and/or supplies.  Put the sales in as a home show and use the free and reduced price books to get all that you need.   Recruit 10 children.  Consultants often end up with about $50 in my pocket - sales credit - and good references for home shows.

15. Other ideas include: Fundraiser for a non-profit, Baby showers, Realtors, Dentists, Doctors – First Experience Books – Moving House, Going to the Dentist/Doctor, Mother–Child reading and activity workshops, Soccer, ballet, gymnastics, and other kiddie classes, Art camp.

Use Event Manager to Set-Up eShows

The email invitiation generated when you set up an eShow for a home party through Event Manager has been RE-BRANDED and so are much improved.  Here’s what they look like:

So feel free to use Event Manager to set-up eShows.  The advantage is that it will automatically send the hostess emails coaching them in what they need to do to have a successful show.  These emails do not replace the host coaching calls - but it is a great AUTOMATIC reminder to shows hosts that you don’t need to remember to do.  Here’s an example of one of the host coaching emails they receive:
